可睡斎のひな祭りに行ってきました。掛川市にある可睡斎は、たくさんの雛人形が飾られることで有名です。ここの雛人形は、それぞれの家庭で役目を終えて供養された人形が飾られています。日本では人形だけでなく、古くから大切にしている物には魂が宿るという考え方があります。そのため、きちんと供養することで心残りなくお別れすることができると考えられています。

I went to Kasuisai’s Hinamatsuri. Kasuisai in Kakegawa City is famous for displaying many Hina dolls. The Hina dolls here are decorations of dolls that have completed their roles in each household and have been offered. In Japan, there is a belief that souls reside in objects that have been cherished for a long time, not just in dolls. Therefore, it is believed that by properly offering prayers, one can bid farewell without any regrets.

なぜ雛人形を飾るの？　Why do we display Hina dolls?

古くから日本の公家には「ひいな遊び」という幼い女の子の遊びがありました。人形を使った遊びです。そして、江戸時代には公家の女性が武家へお嫁に行くことがしばしばあり、嫁入り道具として雛人形が持ち込まれました。やがてそれが武家社会や一般の人にも広がって、雛人形を楽しむ習慣が生まれたようです。また、子供が健やかに育ち、将来幸せな家庭を築けるようにという両親の祈りを込めて飾られるものです。

Since ancient times in Japan, there was a game called “Hina Asobi” for young girls from noble families, which involved playing with dolls. During the Edo period, it was common for noblewomen to marry into samurai families, and Hina dolls were often brought as part of their dowry. Eventually, this practice spread to samurai society and the general population, giving rise to the tradition of enjoying Hina dolls. Furthermore, they are displayed with the parents’ prayers for the healthy growth of their children and the establishment of a happy household in the future.

Walking around and seeing dolls displayed not only in the main venue but also in various places throughout the spacious grounds made me feel like I had entered a different world, and time passed quickly. I highly recommend going to see it for yourself!
